Education is a vital part of diabetes treatment. Medical research studies show that learning how to manage diabetes can reduce your risk of diabetes related health problems. Our experienced and caring staff of registered nurses and registered dietitians are committed to help you learn how to manage your diabetes.
The Diabetes Education Center at St. Vincent’s East is recognized by the American Diabetes Association. Staff members have met requirements to become Certified Diabetes Educators with more than 50 years combined experience.
The Diabetes Education Center provides individual and group instruction for persons who need beginner level information and for those who have had diabetes for a while but need current information to be able to better manage their diabetes. Morning, afternoon, and evening classes are available.

Follow-up is available by phone or visit with the registered nurse or registered dietitian for assistance after class completion.
How to Access Services
Referrals to the St. Vincent’s East Diabetes Education Center must be made by the primary care physician. If you do not have a primary care physician the Physician Referral Line/Dial-A-Nurse can assist you at 939-7878.
Insurance Coverage
Most insurers pay all or a portion of the cost of diabetes education. Patients should ask insurance providers if their policy covers Diabetes Self Management Training. If your insurance does not cover diabetes self management training we can refer you to
our financial counselors who can discuss your options.
Support Group
The St. Vincent’s East Diabetes Center also offers a support group that meets monthly to provide support and ongoing information on diabetes management. It meets on the third Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. in classroom C on the second floor of the main hospital. There is no charge for the support group meetings.
Directions to our Location
The Diabetes Education Center is located in Building 46, Suite 470 on the St. Vincent’s East Hospital campus. Enter the main campus and turn left at the first stop sign. Turn right at the next stop sign into parking lot B which is directly in front of Building 46. Enter the building and take the elevators to fourth floor. Turn left off the elevators and proceed to suite 470.
